The International Development SIG (ID SIG) focuses
on the specific and specialized project management needs and issues
of Internationally Funded Projects in the Public Sector in Developing
Countries

internationally funded projects and programs in the public sector
in developing countries and the associated international development
institutions: Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs); other UN
agencies; Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs); and Bilateral
Government Agencies.

between international development project management professionals.
- Provide state-of-the-art information about knowledge, principles,
standards, practices, and techniques in International Development
Project Management.
- Promote project management in international development institutions.
- Promote project management on international development funded
projects and programs in developing countries.
- Provide a resource to lending agencies and officials in developing
countries for improving project management on international
development programs and projects.

Common Challenges of International Development
- Poor quality of project implementation = schedule & disbursement
delays, cost overruns and costly re-engineering
- Projects well conceived technically but poorly from operational/implementation
standpoint
- Poorly implemented project technical assistance
Qualified Project Professionals
- The most important factor for project success is to have competent
and a qualified project manager responsible
- There is an urgent need for qualified PM professionals in-country
and in International Development Institutions
- The highest impact activity would be to require all in-country
PMs to be International Development Project Management certified
Vision for IDPM & 5 Year Strategy
- Develop International Development sub-sector IDPM BOK, competencies,
certification, training, required in-country PM to be certified
IDPMs.
- Develop internal PM capacity of International Development
Institutions.
- Forge links with bilateral and multilateral development >institutions,
and governments and institutions of developing countries.

Standards/Certification
- There are currently no specialized standards or certification
for International Development Project Management.
- There is little training available on this sub-sector. Most
training focuses on international procurement, selection and
evaluation of development projects and financial management.
- There is a need to develop specialized International Development
Project Management: Global competencies and standards, Certification
and Training.
- The IDSIG hopes to build on existing Project Management BOKs
to accomplish these things.
